BIRDING HONDURAS
Birding Resource for Central America

TOURS

Mark Bonta and Jesse Fagan led a tour in search of Central American endemics from 31 July to 10 August 2005. They visited Parque Nacional La Tigra near Tegucigalpa, Lago de Yojoa, and several sites along Honduras's north coast, and found an impressive 282 species in barely over nine days. What makes this count even more remarkable is that there were very few migrants in Honduras during this time to inflate the count. Finding 282 species of mostly resident breeders in so short a time is a great accomplishment, and the makings of an exciting tour. The group recorded one new species for Honduras - Palm Tanager - and found some very notable species rarely reported for Honduras, including Wedge-tailed Sabrewing, Prevost's Ground Sparrow, and Gray-headed Piprites.

“I strongly recommend this trip with Jesse Fagan and Mark Bonta to Central Honduras for anyone wishing to expand their North American Region List or simply to increase the number of species on their Central American list. We found many species that I had diligently searched for in other countries of Central America repeatedly without success. Both men are exceptionally well prepared and eager to please all birders, whether beginner or world class.” Dan L. Canterbury
